Adopting a friend

The adoption process begins on Petfinder or at our shelter door.

We urge all potential adopters to spend time and visit at least once with the animal he or she may be interested in. PLEASE bring your entire family if you intend to apply.

Any interested party must fill out an application in order to adopt. We will call references. Application does not obligate you to adopt the animal, nor will FFF be obligated to approve your application for that animal. We reserve the right to ask you to come back another day to complete the adoption if we cannot complete the application review proccess the day you submit it. Dog applications are usually processed within 24 or 48 hours. Consider this an opportunity to prepare yourself mentally for what you may be in for. In some instances (special cases involving pets with special needs or certain breeds) we will perform a home visit.

Once an application is approved, you must sign a contract and pay the appropriate adoption fee. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY VETTING, LICENSING, TRAINING or OTHER CARE AFTER ADOPTION. For instance, puppies and kittens require three sets of vaccinations prior to being considered immune. We provide all vaccines while the animals are in our care but once puppies or kittens are adopted, you are responsible for obtaining the remaining vaccines. You MUST buy an Indiana Co. or state Lifetime license once you leave our shelter for any dog over 3 months of age. This is the law.

Fees associated with adoptions:
Cats and Kittens $40
Dogs and Puppies $100

Microchipping (provided on site!)
AVID Microchip and insertion $10
Prepaid Registration $15

WHAT'S WITH ALL THE QUESTIONS?

So you want to adopt a pet.

Congratulations! We can't tell you how much we appreciate you giving one of our beloved critters a second chance.

Here's the thing: We're going to ask you a lot of questions. You may feel like you're getting the third degree. We'll probably ask things like: Does your house have a fenced yard? Do you have school-age children? Who's going to be your pet's primary caregiver? Do you have a veterinarian? Why do fools fall in love?

OK, we'll probably skip that last one. But we may ask others. We may even want to come check out your house. (We promise not to mess with your stuff.)

Don't take it personally!

It's not about you. We're sure you're great – after all, you're here!

We take good care of our animals, and we want to make sure they'll go to good homes. So when we ask you questions, please don't hold it against us! You're probably going to give your new pet the best home ever – but not everyone is as awesome as you are.

Really. See all the animals here? They didn't appear out of nowhere. Some of them were neglected. Some of them were abused. But most of them just didn't quite fit in their old homes – at least not well enough to ensure they'd stay there forever.

We want to make sure Spot and Patches and Tiger and Muffin find homes that last forever this time. So if we ask you a lot of questions, try to remember: We're asking because we care, about the pet and about you. We're trying to make matches that last a lifetime.

So if we ask you some personal stuff, just think of the furry tail and the big eyes of the animal you've fallen for, and be patient with us!

It's totally worth the trouble.

What is with all the Questions Image

CatBox

Four to six million homeless cats & dogs in the U.S. lose their lives each year...simply because no one wants them. You can help by adopting a loving shelter animal and inviting a devoted furry friend nto your home!

We do our best to place every animal in a safe, loving home. FFF has more than 20 years of pet/owner "matchmaking" experience and we'll be glad to help you choose the right dog or cat for your personality and lifestyle.

Adopting a dog or cat from FFF is one of the most cost-effective ways to get a healthy, well-socialized pet.

Our adult animals are already spayed or neutered -- but our adoption fees are less than you'd pay a veterinarian to do the operation. Don't forget that we also pay for each animals food, shelter and vaccinations during the whole time the animal is with us.

Another bonus is that your new pet's adoption will open up a space at FFF for the next dog or cat who needs a safe haven. The vacancy you create may save a life!
